Here are two story moments and an environment concept from my final project this year (The Shrike and the Chipmunks by James Thurber) For this particular project I wanted to try a different approach in style and technique than what I usually do. I liked the direction it started to go and hope to continue to work on this.
Its kinda sad that the year is over.. but looking forward to the NEW DECADE! 2010!!

A Story from Grimm's Fairy Tales: Jorinda and Joringel

My final visual development work for this semester. It was from a short fairy tale that had great visuals to explore. For my project I did two environments the interior shot of the dungeon and also an exterior shot showing the environment of the castle and forest. I learned so much this semester from both my vis dev class with John-Paul Balmet as well from Barron Storey's conceptual illustration class. Together I felt I learned so much about art and especially how to keep myself pushing forward as an artist. Thanks for the great semester! Hope everyone enjoys their summer, and any crits or comments are always welcome.

Here are my two characters..one frog is the driver and the other is the gunner. They are not quite done, I would love to finish these to match the style of the boat and also push the poses or even change it when I get more time..just to tell more story about these frogs. This pass weekend I headed to SF Zoo and I am now a student member, which feels cool to have another card in your wallet. Anyway here are some of my sketches I did. I noticed and learned so many things about these animals as I watched them for hours. I believed one of the gorillas seem to have noticed me drawing her as she was eating and she actually turned face me and reclined back as if she was posing for me, it was great.

I did a really quick sketch of this rhino from a photo, right before I slept lastnight..to get some rust off before I head to the zoo this weekend. In my animation class, we have to choose one animal to draw and really get down to really getting it down... Im not going to do the rhino, but i was thinking of studying Gorillas. I'll will post my sketches after this weekend.

Lake Merced

Over the spring break, I headed to Lake Merced to do some landscape paintings. This is my second painting at this location, however this time I didn't want to paint the lake. Hopefully during summer I can do tons of these studies. (4" x 6" acrylics/ about 1 hour). Check out Nathan Fowkes landscape studies...tite!

My object painting for Nelson's class. (10x8" acrylics) I should have spent more time on the shadow, plus the shell needs a little more work. However I cant wait for the final project. I will be painting an environment piece of the Hawaiian coral reefs, but you wont see that until the end of May.

Thanks to my buddy Henry Ho for lending me his copy of David Colman's The Art of Animal Design. I read the entire book in one long sitting and was amazed of what I have learned from studying his drawings to reading every single text in the book. He talked about memory sketching as part of your studying process and how it will benefit in your drawings. After drawing a certain animal at the zoo, go home and try to draw it yourself but instead adding some story and character to your drawing. Since I live near SF zoo I kept on drawing the polar bear over and over, so I tried this memory sketch the next morning after finishing his book. This sketch took about 10 mins and then added some color. (the mouse thing was done many times before by David but I thought I will try it too.)

I really liked the model's body structure which made it very interesting for me to capture. She had a bony structure but yet had a lil extra in the belly. Her poses were great and I learned a lot that night. Another night of weight-lifting.

My final illustration project was to paint my previous black and white painting in color. I used acrylics on illustration board 10" by 10". Probably about 50 hours total. Overall, the color beats my black and white and I enjoyed using color.

Here i sketched this monkey using sketchbook pro on my mac with a wacom tablet...its a really cool medium that acts just like a real sketchbook such as using tools like pen, pencil, sharpies, and etc. I really liked the emotion that came out of this sketch.
